Assessment mission to Tindouf, Algeria
20 March 2015
At the request of NGO partners on the ground, throughout March INSO will conduct a Scoping & Assessment Mission to the Sahrawi Refugee Camps near Tindouf, Algeria.
The mission will meet with NGOs, UN, donors, Government and other stakeholders to review the current safety co-ordination structures and identify strengths and weakness and make recommendations for response.
The camps have been home to an estimated 160,000 Sahrawi since the late 1970's and have witnessed sporadic violence related to the wider Saharan context (smuggling, kidnapping, arms trading etc). A turning point came with the abduction of three international aid workers (2 spanish and 1 italian) from Rabouni’s
El Protocolo in October 2011.
